IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1.3 - announced September, 26 and GAs September 29, 2017.

IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1.3 server and operations center, was announced on September 26, 2017 and becomes generally available on September 29, 2017.    This version includes:

Automatic Client Updates:   Operations Center's capability to automate the update of clients. You can create schedules to update one or more backup-archive clients. As new update packages are released, they are automatically downloaded. When an update schedule runs, installation files are copied to the client system and the client is updated to the specified software version. You can also use the Operations Center to monitor, cancel, or reschedule updates. After automatically downloading the updates from the IBM website, the hub server will automatically replicate the needed updates over to the spoke servers.

Tiering to Cloud:  Tier to cloud allows you to have directory container data moved to a cloud container after a specific number of days. This setting allows you to exert greater control over where data is stored to better balance the performance & cost benefits of different tiers of storage.

Storage Agent TLS 1.2 automatic certificate exchange.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Preannounced - August 23, 2017

IBM has just introduced the next generation in data protection and availability for virtual environments,  and it is a game changer. IBM Spectrum Protect™ Plus is the newest addition to the IBM Spectrum Storage family of software-defined solutions, which delivers VM data availability for businesses of all sizes. It deploys in minutes as a virtual appliance. It can help non-backup specialists create and manage backup jobs using SLA-based configuration policies. It employs role-based management of the backup and recovery process so that anyone can use it, but administrators can limit people on the actions they can take. It can create and provide a familiar searchable catalog of protected VMs and files so that recovery works the way people expect. It is available as a stand-alone solution and can integrate with IBM Spectrum Protect to allow long-term offload of backup copies for data governance and compliance requirements. And it provides an API that can be used to automatically create copies for non-backup use cases such as analytics activities and DevOps.

Spectrum Protect 7.1.7 is generally available on September 16, 2016

Spectrum Protect version 7.1.7 became generally available on September 16, 2016.   This version includes:

  • The ability to add a tape copy pool to either a new or existing directory container storage pool.  As an alternative to using replication, you can now copy data from directory-container pools to tape. The tapes can be stored onsite and used to repair storage pool data if damage occurs.
  • Support for Amazon S3 cloud containers.  This new feature will allow you to leverage the power of cloud computing by creating storage pools that back up data to Amazon S3 cloud storage.
  • Simplified LDAP integration.  7.1.7 updates the LDAP integration so you can authenticate Spectrum Protect (Tivoli Storage Manager) users by using an Active Directory database on a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server. With this method, you use the standard user accounts that are registered with the LDAP server. The same user ID can be used to authenticate to the Spectrum Protect (Tivoli Storage Manager) server and to the LDAP server.
  • Additionalhybrid storage pool capabilities.  With hybrid cloud storage, data is stored in local directories before being transferred to the cloud. This helps to ensure that backups complete on time and meet service-level agreements.

I've added 5 new videos and demos covering these new features - check them out!

Spectrum Protect (TSM) with Spectrum Scale (GPFS)

I've upload two videos covering how Spectrum Protect's db, logs and storagepools can benefit from being hosted on Spectrum Scale (GPFS).    They are under the Storage page.

The first video is an overview of how this architecture looks.  The second video goes into details on how to design and size such a solution.

There are 3 older videos out there on: 1.  Using Spectrum Protect to backup data hosted on GPFS; 2. Using HSM to migrate GPFS data to Spectrum Protect; 3. Using Spectrum Protect as a disaster recovery solution for GPFS.

IBM Spectrum Protect High Speed Data Transfer

Check out my new videos on how to determine the performance benefits of using IBM Spectrum Protect High Speed Data Transfer.  This 7.1.6 feature uses Aspera FASP with protect storagepool and node replication.   FASP optimizes data transfer, by improving data throughput on an impaired network.  The videos show you how you can get a 30 day trial license, and how to measure the performance gains of FASP over TCP.

IBM Spectrum Protect 7.1.6 - GA on June 17, 2016

Spectrum Protect REST API

At version 7.1.3, Spectrum Protect began supporting a REST API for both the Operations Center and Client Management Services.  I did a short video on using the API and also wrote a sample PowerShell script to access the OC and lock a node.  Have a look at the video and code below.

Spectrum Protect REST API Video
