Spectrum Protect 7.1.7 is generally available on September 16, 2016

Spectrum Protect version 7.1.7 became generally available on September 16, 2016.   This version includes:

  • The ability to add a tape copy pool to either a new or existing directory container storage pool.  As an alternative to using replication, you can now copy data from directory-container pools to tape. The tapes can be stored onsite and used to repair storage pool data if damage occurs.
  • Support for Amazon S3 cloud containers.  This new feature will allow you to leverage the power of cloud computing by creating storage pools that back up data to Amazon S3 cloud storage.
  • Simplified LDAP integration.  7.1.7 updates the LDAP integration so you can authenticate Spectrum Protect (Tivoli Storage Manager) users by using an Active Directory database on a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server. With this method, you use the standard user accounts that are registered with the LDAP server. The same user ID can be used to authenticate to the Spectrum Protect (Tivoli Storage Manager) server and to the LDAP server.
  • Additionalhybrid storage pool capabilities.  With hybrid cloud storage, data is stored in local directories before being transferred to the cloud. This helps to ensure that backups complete on time and meet service-level agreements.

I've added 5 new videos and demos covering these new features - check them out!

Spectrum Protect (TSM) with Spectrum Scale (GPFS)

I've upload two videos covering how Spectrum Protect's db, logs and storagepools can benefit from being hosted on Spectrum Scale (GPFS).    They are under the Storage page.

The first video is an overview of how this architecture looks.  The second video goes into details on how to design and size such a solution.

There are 3 older videos out there on: 1.  Using Spectrum Protect to backup data hosted on GPFS; 2. Using HSM to migrate GPFS data to Spectrum Protect; 3. Using Spectrum Protect as a disaster recovery solution for GPFS.

IBM Spectrum Protect High Speed Data Transfer

Check out my new videos on how to determine the performance benefits of using IBM Spectrum Protect High Speed Data Transfer.  This 7.1.6 feature uses Aspera FASP with protect storagepool and node replication.   FASP optimizes data transfer, by improving data throughput on an impaired network.  The videos show you how you can get a 30 day trial license, and how to measure the performance gains of FASP over TCP.

IBM Spectrum Protect 7.1.6 - GA on June 17, 2016

Check out the demos and presentations we are posting.

Spectrum Protect with Spectrum Scale (TSM with GPFS)

Spectrum Scale (GPFS) has unique integration with Spectrum Protect. These major features are: scalable backup processing, hierarchical storage management, and fast disaster recovery. When these products are integrated, the solution addresses enterprise requirements in data protection and data management for large GPFS file systems.     Check out the three videos I added in the new STORAGE page that cover using mmbackup, HSM and SOBAR.   If you are at Interconnect, stop by and take my new hands-on-lab which also covers Spectrm Scale and Protect's mmbackup, HSM and SOBAR.

Spectrum Protect REST API

At version 7.1.3, Spectrum Protect began supporting a REST API for both the Operations Center and Client Management Services.  I did a short video on using the API and also wrote a sample PowerShell script to access the OC and lock a node.  Have a look at the video and code below.

Spectrum Protect REST API Video

<#  Short PowerShell Script to lock a node in Spectrum Protect using Restful API
    Syntax : locknode <Node>
    OC Rest API:  7.1.4
    Note:  Operates on a single server environment #>

<# get the node name #>

<# Set Up headers for Rest API call to Operations Center #>
$admin = "admin"
$secPw = ConvertTo-SecureString "Object00" -AsPlainText -Force
$cred = New-Object PSCredential -ArgumentList $admin,$secPw
$headers = @{}
$headers.Add( "OC-API-Version", "1.0" )
$headers.Add( "accept" , "application/json" )

<# Call the Rest API to get the list of current clients
   Note that if you have an unsigned certificate, you must add code to ignore it #>
$nodelist = Invoke-RestMethod -uri "https://localhost:11090/oc/api/clients" -Credential $cred -Headers $headers

<# Make sure the node exists #>
$locknode = $nodelist.clients | Where-Object { $_.Name -like $NodeName }
If (($locknode | Measure-Object).Count -ne 1) {
    Write-Output "$NodeName not found in list of nodes or multiple matches.  Exiting..."
    Exit 1

<# Build the command to lock the node and pass it to the rest API#>
$restcommand = "https://localhost:11090/oc/api/servers/" + ($locknode.SERVER) + "/clients/" + $locknode.Name + "/lock"
(Invoke-RestMethod -uri $restcommand -Credential $cred -Headers $headers -Method Put).Message.Messagefordev

Data Protection for VMware - Self Service File Restore

At version 7.1.3 and later, our developers have introduced a Self Service File Restore feature into Data Protection for VMware.  This feature makes it much easier to  allow virtual machine users to safely and easily restore their own files from virtual machines backed up on a Spectrum Protect Server.

Watch my short video here.

Spectrum Protect for Mail - VMware Integration

One of the highest priorities for Spectrum Protect (TSM) development is enhancing the integration between Microsoft Applications like SQL Server and Exchange and Spectrum Protect when they are hosted in a VMware Environment.

Version 7.1.2 of Spectrum Protect for Mail  enhances Microsoft Exchange integration when the Exchange servers are hosted in VMware and the virtual Machines are backed Up with Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments.

In this short video, I show the new combined GUI that allows you to do a Exchange 2013 database restore directly from a backed up VM .

The development team for Protect has written a very good white paper that discusses the many options for using Protect in virtualized environments.  It's highly reccomended if your backing up an application that is virtualized.

Spectrum Protect Part of the IBM Spectrum Storage Family

IBM has recently started rebranding Tivoli Storage Manager to Spectrum Protect.  We've done this to help align the name of our data protection software with all the other storage software IBM is now offering within the IBM Spectrum Storage portfolio.

As you go through the videos on our site, you will see that we've started changing the text descriptions to match new nomenclature.  Although the older videos will still be available, Tricia and I will start phasing in the new IBM Spectrum Protect names as we add content to the site.

As you might expect with over 20 years of product videos, documentation, and innovation, the transition to the new name will take some time.  But our hope is that Spectrum Protect's close alignment with other storage products within IBM will lead to continuing data protection innovations.

In the meantime, please feel free to send Tricia and I suggestions for the types of videos you would like to see.
